Design and Features of the Smart Sock:
To help identify fall risks in advance, researchers at Nottingham School of Art & Design developed a smart sock that integrates electronic textile technology with motion sensors—offering a novel layer of protection for seniors.
Tiny motion sensors are embedded around the ankle area of the sock and connect to a detachable microcontroller via Bluetooth. This controller transmits real-time movement data to a smartphone or other device. By tracking movement patterns, the technology can quickly detect unusual body responses, particularly sudden loss of balance or irregular motion.
The sensors are encased in resin for protection, ensuring they remain durable without affecting the sock’s comfort or ease of washing.The built-in circuitry is compact and non-intrusive, making the sock feel just like a regular pair of socks.
Monitoring Falls and Fall Risks:
One of the sock’s core functions is to detect abnormal movements and distinguish them from regular physical activity. It can not only recognize when a fall has occurred but also detect near-fall events, issuing warnings to the wearer or notifying family members and caregivers about the elevated risk.
If the sock detects a fall, it immediately sends an alert to designated contacts, allowing for rapid emergency response. This is particularly important for seniors who might not be able to seek assistance on their own after falling. Quick alerts can make a crucial difference in timely assistance and recovery outcomes.
Research shows the sock’s fall detection accuracy reaches an impressive 99.4%, while its ability to detect near-falls is 94.2%. These high levels of precision mean the sock offers a highly reliable way to monitor movement and reduce the risk of serious incidents.
